چکیده
The preconditioned conjugate gradient (CG) method is becoming accepted as a powerful tool for solving the linear systems of equations resulting from the application of the finite element method. Applications of the non-linear algorithm are mainly confined to the diagonally scaled CG. In this study the coupling of preconditioning techniques with non-linear versions of the conjugate gradient and quasi-Newton methods creates a set of conjugateand secant-Newton methods for the solution of non-linear problems. The preconditioning matrices used to improve the ellipticity of the problem and to reduce the computer storage requirements are obtained by the application of the partial preconditioning and the partial elimination techniques. Both techniques use a drop-off parameter $ to control the computer storage demands of the method, making it more versatile for any computer hardware environment. Consideration is given to the development of a highly effective stability test for the Line search minimization routine, which computcs a.ccurate values without much effort. This results in a beneficiary effect not only on the convergence properties of the methods but on their efficiency as well.

Probabilistic Interpretation of Linear Solvers
This paper proposes a probabilistic framework for algorithms that iteratively solve unconstrained linear problems Bx = b with positive definite B for x. The goal is to replace the point estimates returned by existing methods with a Gaussian posterior belief over the elements of the inverse of B, which can be used to estimate errors. Recent probabilistic interpretations of the secant family of q...
متن کاملA discrete Newton algorithm for minimizing a function of many variables
Many algorithms have been proposed for finding a local minimum of a function f ( x ) f rom R" into R ~ using only function and gradient values. These include discrete Newton methods, quasi -Newton methods, and the conjugate gradient algorithm. For a discussion of these methods, see, for example [1]. There are classes of problems for which each of these methods is the most efficient. In this pap...
متن کاملTwo Settings of the Dai-Liao Parameter Based on Modified Secant Equations
Following the setting of the Dai-Liao (DL) parameter in conjugate gradient (CG) methods, we introduce two new parameters based on the modified secant equation proposed by Li et al. (Comput. Optim. Appl. 202:523-539, 2007) with two approaches, which use an extended new conjugacy condition. The first is based on a modified descent three-term search direction, as the descent Hest...
متن کاملQuasi-newton Methods for Nonlinear Least Squares Focusing on Curvatures
Most existing quasi-Newton methods for nonlinear least squares problems incorporate both linear and nonlinear information in the secant update. These methods exhibit good theoretical properties, but are not especially accurate in practice. The objective of this paper is to propose quasi-Newton methods that only update the nonlinearities. We show two advantages of such updates. First, fast conve...
متن کاملNew hybrid conjugate gradient method for unconstrained optimization
Conjugate gradient methods are widely used for unconstrained optimization, especially large scale problems. Most of conjugate gradient methods don’t always generate a descent search direction, so the descent condition is usually assumed in the analyses and implementations. Dai and Yuan (1999) proposed the conjugate gradient method which generates a descent direction at every iteration. Yabe and...
